Parents Under Pressure
Just to start out, I want to say that this is NOT a political post. Having said that, a lot of what has been transpiring in American politics has inspired me to write. This week’s blog post is about ableism and microaggressions surrounding mental health.
“Nuts”
“Mentally impaired”
“Lunatic”
“Batsh*t crazy”
“Crazy”
These are actual terms that have been used to describe political adversaries over the past year. These are the terms that we are hearing regularly in the news, in soundbites, memes, clips, and posts. These are also terms we hear in the workplace. How many times have you heard things like:
“She’s schizo…you never know who you are going to get.”
“The weather here is bipolar. One day it's sunny and the next day it is raining.”
“Forgive me! The need to keep my desk neat is just my OCD tendencies.”
“If you think we are going to make that deadline in time, you must be crazy.”
“Did you go to Kerry’s Oktoberfest party? Dude! It was insane!”
Maybe you have heard these phrases before at work. Or maybe you are like me and have used some of these terms before, not realizing the impact that your words could have on others. Terms like these are considered ableist and can actually hurt your people and culture. Here’s some information to consider.
